Last week I talked about Rule of Odds, this week I’m talking about compositional balance. When you place a subject off center, sometimes the photograph can seem off balance. By placing an element in the background, you can create balance. Take a look at the image here. I placed the children in the foreground and put them in focus. If the parents weren’t placed in the background, the portrait would feel empty and poorly framed. By putting the parents in the background, I created that sense of balance.
