Some types of subjects choose the camera. Photographing 18th Century reenactors with a modern digital camera feels too easy. A 70-year-old Rolleiflex, on the other hand, seems like the perfect way to honor the craftsmanship and authenticity they bring to the Jockey Hollow spring encampment. Don't call them reenactors. They call themselves Living Historians. At the 248th Anniversary of the Battle of Monmouth (Freehold, NJ • June 21, 2026), they don't just wear the past... they live it. Strolling in NY's Greenwich Village the other day, I met Rahul near Washington Square Park. Rahul, from Tinsukia, a city in the state of Assam, India, works as a breakdancer, dog walker & a mime. Not all at the same time. I photographed Rahul with his two Pekinese pooches, Bob & Fionn. Rolleiflex 3.5 on Ilford XP2
Princeton New Jersey on the first warm day in late February was abuzz with people. I was there to see the newly reopened University Art Gallery, which is fabulous. Lots of people were out enjoying the surprise sun and warmth. I was there with my vintage 3.5 making portraits.
I had an assignment to photograph Jesse Jackson as he campaigned for the Presidency in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
My old fashioned Rolleiflex camera attracts attention.
