I love photographing high school seniors, probably because I feel I’m stopping time for these 17 year-olds. Recently, I photographed Jaala, a senior at Montclair High School.  When her mom came in to order portraits, I was struck by something she told me. These photographs, she said, were so important to her and her family. She spoke eloquently about the meaning of family, youth and history, and I had to ask her if I could film her.

The memories that these portraits represent and the feelings that photographs engender end up meaning a whole lot more than “just a picture”.
