I was assigned to photograph Judge Maryanne Trump Barry for New Jersey Monthly magazine. The date was July 1994 and Judge Barry was a Senior United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, based in Newark. The Court of Appeals is right below the Supreme Court in the federal court system.
She died this morning, November 13, 2023. In the New York Times obituary, she comes off as privileged, but thoughtful and her rulings from the bench followed a moderate conservative tradition…a far cry from her younger brother, the former President. Though Judge Barry supported President Trump, she said of her brother that “all he wants to do is appeal to his base. He has no principles. None.”
Also from the Times obit: “After 13 years as a homemaker, she enrolled in law school at Hofstra University, on Long Island, where she was editor of its law review. She graduated in 1974 and went to work for the government, becoming an assistant federal prosecutor in New Jersey. She was chief of the civil division from 1977 to 1982 and first assistant United States Attorney from 1981 to 1983, placing her, at the time, among the highest-ranking women in the office of a federal prosecutor.”
