The Value of a Portrait

I love photographing high school seniors, probably because I feel I'm stopping time for these 17 year-olds. Recently, I photographed Jaala, a senior at Montclair High School.  When her mom came in to order portraits, I was struck by something she told me. These photographs, she said, were so important to her and her family. She spoke eloquently about the meaning of family, youth and history, and I had to ask her if I could [...]

Wow, what a turn out for this year's Oktoberfest in Montclair, NJ! All because of the 5,500 of you that made it out a few weeks ago to Lackawanna Plaza in downtown Montclair for the annual festival. Oktoberfest in Montclair is where you can eat good food, drink good beer, listen to music AND, as usual, the PHIL CANTOR PHOTOGRAPHY PhotoBooth/Studio was there. The goal has always been to take the silliest photos of [...]

The 2018 bicycle “Tour De Montclair” was held this past weekend starting at Lackawanna Plaza. Phil Cantor Photography was there to share the fun with all the bike riders with our "Pedal Portrait Project"! It was a photo booth designed so bikers and pedestrians alike could come and get their photo taken.  It was hilarious. Whole families turned out, some with infants in baby seats, there were mountain bikes, road bikes, one-of-a-kind bikes, and [...]

Maine coast: Exploring with a camera

2024-05-03T16:59:54-04:00August 27th, 2018|art photography, Maine, Photography, photography tips, travel|

One morning this summer, while everyone slept late, I went out with my Panasonic Lumix GX8 to fish for photographs during my travels this summer to Blue Hill, Maine. The fog had rolled in with the tide, and before it burned off as the sun came up, I made some photographs trying to capture the ruggedness, the isolation and quiet of the landscape. I opted for black and white, even though the waves had brought [...]

Hiking in the Italian Alps

2024-05-03T16:59:54-04:00August 13th, 2018|art photography, Hiking, Italy, Photography, travel|

Montclair, NJ Family Portrait Photographer Phil Cantor writes: I hiked in northern Italy two years ago and I fell in love with it. So, I returned again this summer to an area so far north in Italy that it might as well had been in Austria. In fact, the dominant language is German, the food is hearty with sausages, the architecture is Teutonic and the scenery looks like it is right our of The Sound of Music. [...]
